The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for investigating workplace accidents, especially ones in which a worker is killed on the job, and determining if an employer is in violation of workplace safety regulations. If the employer is deemed to have committed safety violations, OSHA can issues warnings, require corrective action, issue fines, or a combination of any or all of these things.

mWx4e1iAccording to a recent news article from Canmua, OSHA issued fines to the major online merchant, Amazon, for alleged violation of workplace safety regulations. According to a recent report from ABC News, there was an explosion at the Dow Chemical factory in northeastern Massachusetts. The explosion resulted in four workers becoming injured. This, however, is the not the first serious workplace incident that occurred in this particular building. In 2013, there was another explosion at the same location that resulted in the death of a worker.

n2uw3LGIn this latest serious workplace accident, emergency personnel, including firefighters and EMTs, were called to the scene around 2:30 in the afternoon. Authorities soon determined that while there was a serious explosion of some sort, there was no fire caused as a result of the blast that injured the four employees. Officials at the chemical plant issued a statement saying that there were no chemicals released into the environment as a result of the explosion. According to a recent news article form the Worcester Telegram, a 30-year-old man was killed in an industrial accident on Christmas Eve. The victim was working as a CNC operator when the accident occurred. A CNC machine is a large machine designed to cut metal into desired shapes. CNC is an abbreviation for computerized numerical control, and is designed to take a computer model of the item and translate it into to cutting directions for the machine to make the part.

According to a recent regional news release from the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a maker of granite countertops in Acton, Massachusetts has exposed employees to repeated safety hazards while violating worker safety regulations.

safetymaskThe company was cited for safety violations in 2014 following a finding of six specific infractions and was fined $8,500. Employer was also required to submit proof to OSHA that the dangerous working conditions likely to cause an on-the-job injury were corrected.   The employer allegedly did not submit this report, and OSHA reopened its investigation. sewerpipesIf OSHA determines an employer was at-fault in connection with a fatal workplace injury, the agency has the ability to levy fines against the employer and require the employer to make certain changes. However, it should be noted that under the Workers’ Compensation system, it is not necessary for an employee who is injured on the job to prove any fault on behalf of his or her employer.   In the case of fatal on-the-job accident, it is not necessary for the employee’s family to prove fault on behalf of the employer. In late 2013, she was working for employer, when a heavy cart rolled over her left foot in the course and scope of her employment, according to court records.

This time of year, families across the country are driving out to the country to go to county fairs, pumpkin patches, and apple festivals. While these events and festivals can be a lot of fun for the entire family, for workers it often means long hours and sometimes even dangerous conditions.

rideAccording to a recent news article from NBC, a worker at a state fair was working in the midway running an attraction when a nearby carnival ride malfunctioned. The ride was called the Crazy Mouse, and it was spinning carnival riders around when a piece of the ride broke off and went flying toward the state fair mainstay. Witnesses say the piece of the ride hit the worker in the midway and caused a serious, but non-life threatening injury. While many people come to the hospital after injury or illness, it is often overlooked how dangerous a hospital environment can be for those working there. According to a recent news article from CBS, a hospital worker was injured after an assault by a patient.

mgySe7yAuthorities say the 16-year-old patient was admitted to the mental health division of the hospital in a secure part of the state-owned facility. This patient allegedly attacked a female hospital worker, causing a serious injury. It is alleged the patient grabbed the employee and shoved her head into a brick wall. The patient is alleged to have kicked the victim repeatedly, causing additional injury. The injured worker was treated for her injuries at hospital, though there has been no update on her condition as of this time. Continue reading

Each year in Boston and across the United States, many workers are injured at work. While some fatal accidents make the local or even national news, far more go unnoticed by media. It’s only occasionally that some on-the-job accidents involve unique circumstances that capture the public’s attention.

komodo-dragon-571597-m.jpgAccording to a news report from KETV 7, a zookeeper injury was one of those cases. A zoo employee in Omaha was reportedly seriously injured after being bitten by a lizard.

The female zookeeper was performing routine care on a Komodo dragon when it bit her on the hand. After the worker was bit on the hand, first responders were called to zoo and transported the zookeeper to a local hospital.

While this might not seem like it would cause a severe on-the-job injury, the problem has to do with fact the animal is venomous and typically has serious bacteria on the its teeth and in its mouth which can cause serious infections. Doctors first cleaned and closed the wound with stitches and then put her on a course of antibiotics and anti-venom. Due to the lizard’s venom and amount of type of bacteria and the potentially deadly infection it could cause she was initially listed in critical condition and admitted to the hospital to undergo additional to control and prevent infection.
